As a nation of drivers, how safe are we? We at AXA Insurance, recently carried out a European road behaviour survey, which examined key questions on road safety and driving behaviours, and we would like to share our findings. Feel free to share your views too!
Most people would say they are ‘road safe’, have you every heard the driving expression- “Only a fool breaks the 2 second rule”?! In other words the car in front must be at least 2 seconds ahead of you to be a ‘safe’ distance. 95% of Irish drivers feel that driving fast a few metres behind the car in front is dangerous. Have you ever been tailgated? Share your experiences with us here – good or bad.
Irish drivers consider that both the Gardai and individuals are responsible for road safety. As a credit to us all, only 4% of Irish drivers have been fined over the last year. Do you believe this? An encouraging statistic is that 44% of Irish drivers want more severity around road traffic offence penalties.
Road safety statistics in Ireland remain the best in Europe, with 64% of drivers considering their fellow citizens to be good drivers; in fact the Irish believe that UK and German drivers have better driving skills. What do you think?
Are you aware that AXA was the first Insurance Company associated with Road Safety Campaigns? How do you feel about drink driving awareness adverts – do shock tactics work or do you just switch channels?
We look forward to hearing from you and your views on road safety. Remember ‘Road Safety’ is important, especially in this festive season, Have a lovely Christmas. Happy and safe motoring!
I think more drink driving ad campaigns need to be run, displaying the realities & consequences from injury to legal penalties.
There have been some attempts using shock type campaigns for speed driving but is shock the way to go to make sure people understand the risks ? There’s one ad running currently with someone who got in an accident and suffered brain injury. Is this successful in getting people to think twice before drink driving ? I find it quite striking, that’s for sure !
Tailgating is one of the most annoying and dangerous practises on the road. When the gap eventually arises to pull out of the pay, the tailgater is inevitably already halfway into the gap, trying to overtake you on the wrong side. I generally try to stay out of the fast lane, and avoid confrontation on the roads. Some people get so aggressive, it is almost as if they don a suit of armour when climbing into a motor car. Rather let them speed off and go crash into somebody else, it just ain’t worth the hassle!
