AXA Insurance would like to make a plea to all road users for extra caution on our roads during the upcoming bank holiday weekend, a busy weekend for people driving down the country.
The death toll from road accidents in Ireland to date is 40 people who have lost their lives, compared to 57 at the same point last year – stats taken from the Garda National Traffic Bureau.
This appalling loss of life is just not acceptable. Too many young people are killed on our roads due to speeding, careless driving and drink driving, this weekend I hope we all take care on the roads.
So remember the following this Easter weekend:
- Slow down – drive at a speed appropriate to road conditions
- Never, ever drink and drive
- Exercise appropriate care when overtaking or turning onto major road junctions
- Maintain enough distance from the car in front
- Allow enough time for your journey, stop for breaks at regular intervals to avoid fatigue
- Ensure that all back seat passengers wear their seatbelts.
As Seamus Merity, Head of Marketing at AXA and official sponsor of the Roadsafe Roadshow series commented “As a company we continue to support road safety campaigns and highlight the dangers of irresponsible driving, however it is up to each driver to be responsible for themselves and others in the car. This is starting to take effect with road deaths on the decrease, but drivers must stay vigilant to achieve this.”
AXA Insurance has a strong commitment to road safety through our sponsorship of the recent TV3 road safety documentary series ‘Impact’ and through the AXA Roadsafe Roadshow shown to transition year students to educate them on the dangers associated with driving.
